EXPLOSIVES & APPLIED CHEMISTRY

The Department of Explosives and Applied Chemistry was established in 1985 with a mission :

To impart advance training in the field of High Energy Materials and Polymers to the Officers of DRDO/DGOF/DNAI and ISRO through short duration courses ( CEP ) and long duration courses.

To undertake high quality research work of international standard in the field of High Energy Materials and Polymers through sponsored projects under various schemes.

The Department has renowned Scientists with long experience of teaching and proven record of research in the various area of high energy materials and polymers. The Department has also developed the adequate expertise to impart training in the following specialized areas such as :

Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Warfare. Environmental and Non-lethal Warfare.
Non-destructive fast and slow neutron activation analysis technique for detection and analysis of explosives / propellants / polymers.

The Department conducts an advanced course on “High Energy Materials” of 43 – weeks of duration.

It is the only course of its kind in the country covering all aspects of high energy materials such as :
Explosives, Rocket and gun propellants; Combustion of high energy materials; Internal, terminal and underwater ballistics, measurements in high energy materials; Detection of explosives by conventional and advanced techniques; Demolition of explosives, Inspection and quality control of explosive and propellant stores; Explosives and environmental safety; polymers and composites; various techniques for production, processing and filling of explosive in ammunitions etc.

    Research Areas

The Department has expertise and infrastructure to carry out advanced research in the following areas:
Hypergolic liquid and hybrid propellants for rocket application.

    Liquid fuels for Ramjet/Scramjet application
Solid fuel rich propellants based on energetic binders for integrated ram rocket application.
    Strained hydrocarbons for Ramjet/Scramjet propulsion.
Energetic polymers as binders for advanced solid propellants / explosives.
    Aluminized explosives for underwater application.
    Nano-materials for advanced propellants.
Smart polymers stimuli sensitive polymers and hydro-gels.
    Gelled propellants.
