APPLIED PHYSICS

    The Department of Applied Physics is involved in R&D activities in the area of Lasers and Fiber Optic Sensors catering to the needs of the Armed Forces.The Department also imparts advanced training to the sponsored candidates leading to the award of M.Tech degree, besides teaching the various specialized courses run by the Institute.
    The Department guides graduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. students of different colleges / universities for their project / dissertation work. Various short intensive courses and CEPs in the relevant areas are conducted by the department to ensure exchange of knowledge and interaction between researchers and scientists.

M. Tech. (Lasers & Electro-optics)

Syllabus covers the wide range of topics including:
  • Fiber Optics
  • Nonlinear Optics, Holography and Optical Signal Processing
  • Laser Engineering
  • Military and General Applications of Lasers

Second year is fully dedicated for The Dissertation/Project Work on the topic related to the field of Lasers and Fiber Optics, which has relevance to Defence in general.


Thrust Areas of Research

Laser System Development
Department has designed and developed various high efficiency solid sate lasers and high power CO2 laser.

Fiber Optic Sensors
Department has successfully developed and implemented various fiber optic based sensors for Naval, Aerospace and industrial applications.

Theoretical Quantum Optics
Theoretical study of the emerging field of the Squeezed State Generation has been accomplished and study and analysis of Quantum computing and Quantum Teleportation is in progress.

Non-Linear Optics.

The various Organic and Inorganic Nonlinear Optical Materials would be tested for the Second harmonic generation which will be accompanied by theoretical study.


Facilities Available

  • Optical Time Domain Reflecto meter (OTDR)
  • Tektronix Storage Oscilloscope 500 MHz, with 5 Giga samples per second along with FFT capability.
  • High Voltage Probe: Probe to monitor up to 40 KV.
  • Optical Fiber & Accessories: Optical fibers - Single mode & Multimode, Plastic fiber, Laser diodes, Pigtailed diodes and detectors, Directional couples.
  • Fiber Optic Splicing Unit.
  • Power meter for optical fiber up to nano watt range.
  • Laser Power Meter: Measurement of CO2 (10.6 ?m) Laser power upto100 Watts
  • Laser Energy Meter: Laser pulse energy measurement up to 1J.
  • Laser beam profiler for wavelength range from visible to 1.06 ?m.
  • CW CO2 Laser: CO2 laser wavelength 10.6 ?m operating up to 50 watts continuous wave. The system is developed within the Department.
  • Fiber Optic Sensor for measurement of rotational frequency. The system capable of measuring from 6 RPM to 9999 RPM. Developed within the Department.
  • Fiber Optic Sensor for precision measurement of physical dimensions up to 1 ?m accuracy.


Sponsored Projects

Department carried out collaborative project with M/S Amphenol, Pune on the preparation of Multi-strand Optical fiber Connectors for under water application. The project was sponsored by NPOL, DRDO, Kochi. The project has been successfully completed and connectors are tested for all conditions. Department has been involved in augmentation of high energy Nd: Glass Laser for initiation of explosives. The project was sponsored by HEMRL, Pune.
